Hi, this is Vanessa, your salon host.
The news in California this summer has been all about the raids targeting immigrants led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), mass protests in Los Angeles, and the Trump administration sending in thousands of National Guard and Marines over the objections of Governor Gavin Newsom.
ICE has also started raids on farms and agricultural sites, which are integral to California’s economy. That means a majority of workers have stopped showing up, crops are not being picked, fruit and vegetables are rotting at peak harvest time, and a lot of farmers are now on the brink.
Then the headlines happened here in Sacramento last month when masked Federal agents arrested 10+ people in the parking lot of a Home Depot store. The Fox News reporter invited to ride along for the raid was told agents chose to target Sacramento as a message that the “federal government can and will go wherever they want in the sanctuary state.”
In response, some local organizations that support immigrants in Northern California have banded together and formed a new partnership - the Sacramento RISE (Regional Immigration Support & Empowerment) Hub - to increase the region’s rapid-response infrastructure, access to legal assistance, community education and partnerships to keep families safe.
Join me in conversation with:
Jims Porter, external affairs manger of Opening Doors (the group leading the Sacramento RISE efforts)
Kimberly Clark, executive director of the California Farm Labor Contractor Association
They’ll tell us what’s happening with ICE and immigration raids here and now; how that’s affecting our community and economy (and soon our wallets); and how we can help immigrants in Sacramento and across Northern California .
