ENLIGHTENMENT: Can Sac City Unified School District Survive This Crisis?

  • ENLIGHTENMENT Salon 2221 10th St Sacramento, CA 95814 United States (map)

Hi, it’s Vanessa, your ENLIGHTENMENT salon host.

As California taxpayers, we all invest in our local public schools—but the financial headlines coming out of the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) are really bad.

The district is projecting a historic budget deficit of $170 million, it may run out of cash in July, and it’s actively fighting a takeover by the state of California. Where did the money go?

Sadly, SCUSD isn’t the only one facing a crisis. There are fewer students and shrinking classes in schools around California, which is leading to budget cuts and school closures statewide. So what happens next?

Join me for a salon talk that breaks down SCUSD’s financial crisis and what that could mean for Sacramento students, parents, teachers and staff, and neighborhoods. We’ll also look at how California’s demographic transformation is reshaping K-12 public schools and what that could means for our community's tax dollars.
