Hi, this is Vanessa, your ENLIGHTENMENT salon host.
How does a 2,700-year-old oral epic translate into a modern IMAX spectacle?
Join me for a Saturday morning discussion of the classics and the silver screen as we compare and contrast Homer's written words and Christopher Nolan's film adaptation of The Odyssey.
I’ve invited Steven Karnes, a professor of ancient Greece and mythology in Sacramento State’s Humanities department, to talk with how actors Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Zendaya and Holland hold up against the mythological figures they portray.
I’ve just seen the movie so here are some discussion topics I came up with:
How Nolan did in translating a 24-book oral poem into a three-hour film.
How to compare Homer’s cunning characters with Nolan’s modern political critique
How the film’s setting in real-world environments and on the IMAX screen alter how we read the original poem
Bring your own commentary and questions — nothing is too dumb or too small to ask .
Tickets are $5. There will be light refreshments, but please feel free to BYO.
